Stigmata

A lecture on the spiritual/religious dimension of tattoos.

Religion and tattoos: an impossible combination? In Western culture, tattoos have long been seen as a negative phenomenon, often fueled by a religious background. Yet tattoo practices worldwide have traditionally been linked to the religious or the spiritual. There is even a tattoo tradition within Christianity. Stigmata is an ancient Greek word for tattoos. At the same time, it refers to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus, which are said to have been received by Francis of Assisi, among others. Is there a connection? In this lecture, Roy Clermons will discuss the spiritual religious dimension of tattoos both within and outside Christianity.
